hoof mountains

The mountain where the Muses sing –
the one the sisters all lived on –
in Ancient Greece – Mount Helicon –
was the location of a spring
that’s called the Hippocrene because
when Pegasus – the gull winged horse –
alighted there one Grecian dawn ,
cracked solid rock with stamping hoof ,
the fractured mountain sprang a leek
and from the split there gushed a fountain
and poems spilling all around ,
became a stream and then a creek
and “hippo” means a horse – in Greek .

Sliabh Crúibe

The Lagan river has a source
and can be found by those who seek
in county Down – it’s in the Mournes ,
Dromara is the nearest town
or seven miles north-west from Clough
and where the Lagan leaves the ground –
would you believe it ? – here’s the thing
is on Slieve Croob which is Sliabh Crúibe,

And Sliabh is Mountain
Crúibe, is Hoof …
